MULTIRISING THE OTHER IN I Rita Vilhena
The dancer uses images from a film that was never finished, called Nether Ballerina of Rottingdam. This film revolved around the interactions between filmmaker Demetri Estdelacropolis and the young contemporary dancer Rita Vilhena. The filmmaker's camera eye zoomed in on the eroticized image of the young woman, in everyday moments such as her personal care or when she woke up, but also in intimate scenes such as masturbation, or her struggles to make ends meet as an artist.
The dancer now uses these old images to retell her story and claim her own identity. She doesn't just want to complain about the problems she encountered, but she also wants to build a new story, full of hope and healing. Between the old images and the movements of her body in the present, the dancer transforms the film into a new dance with a new meaning. MULTIRISING THE OTHER IN I is more than just looking back on the past, it's a new conversation about how we shape our memories and how we can build a future that is more inclusive and free.
