The dance between Eros and Thanatos is timeless: a constant field of tension between love and decay, construction and destruction, peace and war. In a world that is wavering under geopolitical tensions and humanitarian crises, that primal dance is taking place before our eyes. How do we find our way in this? Can we turn the tide?
In Monday, choreographer Arno Schuitemaker opts for a radical reversal: the hypnotic performance takes place in reverse, taking the audience on an experience where the footprint appears before the step. Precisely by rewinding events, our understanding of them can change profoundly. As the four dancers perform their movements in reverse, they rebuild the set. In this way, reconstruction takes on a multiple meaning.
Monday is a physical metaphor for "remembering forward", an experience that makes palpable how what is yet to come weighs on the present. What choices do we make in those seemingly ordinary moments when everything can change?
