Liberdade - Kaapverdische Onafhankelijkheid
On Sunday, July 5, Fenix and Kaapverdisch Goud join forces for a special edition of Liberdade, entirely dedicated to morna, the musical heart of Cabo Verde. Morna is more than a musical style. It tells stories of love, longing, migration, homesickness, and connection. In Rotterdam, morna takes on an extra dimension: the Cape Verdean community has been part of the city for over sixty years.
Liberdade Program
Liberdade offers a market with Cape Verdean snacks, books, art, and handmade products from local entrepreneurs. Visit the 'Casa di Cabral' exhibition by The Black Archives, which tells the story of the independence struggle of Cabo Verde and Guinea-Bissau through the story of Amílcar Cabral. DJ Pantcha spins original Cape Verdean records during the Vinyl Sessions and shares stories about the music. Jacqueline Fortes, also known as The Grande Dame, performs a musical ode to morna together with pianist Toy Vieira and guitarist Paulo Bouman, which transitions into a swinging coladeira.
Morna, Heritage and Identity
Watch the film 'Manuel d'Novas'. This documentary takes you into the life, work, and influence of Manuel d'Novas, an important lyricist in Cape Verdean music history. His lyrics formed the basis for many well-known morna songs, sung by artists such as Bana and Cesária Évora. Following the film, there will be a panel discussion led by Valerie de Brito with Alice Fortes, Guy Ramos, and Toy Vieira. They will discuss the significance of morna to the Cape Verdean community, the role of music in cultural heritage, and the influence of migration on identity and cultural transmission.

Fenix, Studio De Zolder and restaurant Mies debut at Museumnacht010
Museumnacht010 takes place on Saturday 7 March, transforming Rotterdam into one big art landscape. This edition welcomes a number of new venues such as the new art museum Fenix on Katendrecht, the interdisciplinary Studio De Zolder in Middelland, and the restaurant Mies, located in a Bauhaus icon.
