Hope NITE / Thalia Theater Hamburg / Guy Weizman
Doubt and skepticism are indispensable in a stable society, because they help to critically examine power structures.
But what happens when those in power use this doubt as a weapon, fueling distrust and twisting truths into lies? In this dangerous game, systems crumble and autocracies gain more and more ground.
German playwright Maria Milisavljević explores this dynamic in Hope, a play that focuses on the timeless struggle for justice and equality. With references to mythological figures and historical events, she connects past and present to show how repression and resistance continue to influence each other throughout the centuries.
Hope is a multilingual and interdisciplinary production full of dance, acting and music. The performance is the result of a unique collaboration between NITE and the Thalia Theater Hamburg. By combining different disciplines and languages, Hope reflects not only on the substantive themes of power and manipulation, but also on the broader question of how societies deal with uncertainty. While structures are faltering and authoritarian powers are increasing, the search for truth and justice continues. Hope thus offers a poignant and urgent look at the tension between doubt and conviction, repression and rebellion.
