Frankenstein Veenfabriek / Joeri Vos
A musical steampunk horror trip about the urge to create and the monsters we bring to life ourselves.
On a gloomy winter evening, a laboratory is bursting at the seams. It is a mess of cables, cords, organ pipes, synthesizers, and scattered professors. Here, laws of nature are turned upside down and death might even be conquered.
With Frankenstein, Veenfabriek breathes new life into Mary Shelley's famous monster. Inspired by the 1818 gothic novel, director Joeri Vos creates an inventive horror trip about our time. Are we helping new monsters into the saddle? Are we at the tipping point of our urge to create?
The musicians of Veenfabriek draw inspiration from Romantic composers, contemporaries of Shelley. Driven by Frankenstein's urge to create, they attempt to finish Schubert's Unfinished Symphony once and for all. The music moves between industrial horror, synthpop, and ritual ecstasy. Designer John van Oostrum creates the set and builds an impressive music installation around a dissected pipe organ. Raw, sizzling, and unpredictable — just like the monster itself.
