Fala Crioulo Ku Mi

Fala Crioulo Ku Mi, Speak Creole With Me, Students conclude the school year with a practical assignment in which they use their language skills in a realistic, cultural context. They strengthen their speaking skills, learn more about the culture of the target language area, and build bridges between generations.

Since September our students have been working hard to learn the Cape Verdean language in our free lessons. Now it is time to practice - together with the elderly - to eat, drink, play games and speak 'Crioulo'.

At the end of the school year, the young adult students in Rotterdam-Zuid organize a cultural dinner. Each student or group prepares a traditional recipe from Cape Verde in the target language and presents it to invited guests – mainly elderly people from Cape Verde where the language is spoken.

During the meal, the students have short conversations with the elders, ask each other questions that have been discussed in the lessons and that fit in with the activities of the afternoon. After the meal, traditional cultural games such as Ouril and Bisca follow, and cultural presentations in which students and elders learn together more about which island someone comes from. (for example: "Which island or region do you come from?").

Intended learning outcomes:

  1. Applied speaking skills in the target language
  2. Cultural awareness and empathy
  3. Cooperation and responsibility
  4. Connection between generations

At the end of the activities, students receive a certificate to celebrate their successful completion of their school year.
