Eerbetoon aan Queen of Gospel Mahalia Jackson - Denise Jannah
After the success in the fall of 2016, in the various Dutch churches and not to forget March 2017 in Suriname with the Mahalia Jackson Church Tour, it is now time for a new series of concerts. On October 26, 2025, we commemorate her 114th birthday.
In mid-2016, “TRC Promotion” Richardo L. Tuinfort decided to organize a series of concerts as a special tribute to the “Queen of Gospel” of all time.
With this concert, Denise Jannah pays tribute to Mahalia Jackson, the most influential, most passionate but also most modest Gospel singer of all time who said about her Gospel music: "I sing God's music because it makes me feel free. It gives me hope. With the blues, when you finish, you still have the blues."
American Mahalia Jackson was born on October 26, 1911 in New Orleans and died on January 27, 1972 in Chicago. In addition to her compelling interpretation of gospel songs, she is also known as a prominent advocate in the American civil rights movement. She achieved great success in 1947 with the song "Move on up a little higher", of which more than one million records were sold. In the fifties she also became immensely popular in Europe and from 1952 to 1971 a series of successful international tours were scheduled for her.
One of the highlights of her singing career Mahalia experienced on August 28, 1963 during a large mass demonstration, the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom” for civil rights and jobs for African Americans, ending at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. There, Reverend Martin Luther King gave his impressive speech “I Have A Dream”. But first, Mahalia Jackson sang the song “I been 'buked and I been scorned” (I am humiliated and scorned) for the 200,000-strong crowd at his special request. She was later a respected guest at the White House and in 1961 she was even received in a private audience by Pope John XXIII. Mahalia Jackson can also be admired in films such as "St. Louis Blues" and "Jazz Festival in Newport".
During this tour Denise Jannah brings a selection of the best known but also the most moving songs of “the Queen of Gospel”. She is accompanied by Danny van Kessel on keys, Pieter Althuis on bass and Walther Muringen on drums.
