DJANGAN! (14+) ISH Dance Collective / Cherony Pelupessy

What happens to a family when war trauma lives in the house like an invisible guest? DJANGAN! (Indonesian for 'don't') takes place in the aftermath of Indonesian history. Four dancers portray a family trapped in silence, tension and unexpected outbursts, in which the fatherly presence has a major impact on their togetherness.

The fatherly presence in the house is clearly palpable, defining and compelling. In silences. In reactions that evade, hold back or, conversely, challenge. Everything revolves around a past that has no place, but does have an influence on the family. This invisible weight determines the patterns within the family. It influences every touch, every glance, and forms an invisible pressure that cannot be escaped.

Choreographer Cheroney Pelupessy uses urban contemporary and influences from traditional dance and instruments to create a melancholic and oppressive family portrait, in which everything is on edge. But DJANGAN! also shows what can arise when a next generation decides not only to carry, but also to let go. To move on, with what was, and to make room for what is yet to come.

Cheroney Pelupessy is a dancer, choreographer and theatre maker with Indonesian, Moluccan and Dutch roots. She weaves traditional and modern dance to tell stories about cultural identity, family and memories. Cheroney has previously created various performances, in which she seeks depth in her cultural roots and connects dance, heritage and community in her search for representation. The performance DJANGAN! is being realised under the banner of ISH Talent, through which ISH supports talented, new makers in their professional development.
