Dignity Chokri Ben Chikha / Action Zoo Humain
In July 2023, the European Union and Tunisia concluded a migration deal. Director Chokri Ben Chikha explores the consequences of this deal for human rights and dignity with his performance ‘Dignity’. Artists, scientists and citizens share their vision on migration in a truth commission led by Mpho Tutu van Furth.
Background of the migration deal
In July 2023, the European Union and Tunisia concluded a much-discussed migration deal. The performance ‘Dignity’ by director Chokri Ben Chikha highlights the consequences of this deal. The central question is whose dignity is at stake when such agreements are concluded and who bears the consequences.
The truth commission in exile
Inspired by the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Chokri Ben Chikha establishes a Tunisian truth commission in exile. On stage, artists, scientists, and citizens share their stories, doubts, and truths about migration and human rights. Mpho Tutu van Furth, daughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, leads this commission.
Part of a series
‘Dignity’ is part of the Waarheidscommissiereeks. Previous parts are De Waarheidscommissie (2018) and De Waarheidscommissie Nederland (2023). The project is based on artistic research that Chokri Ben Chikha and Action Zoo Humain conducted into the consequences of the migration deal in Tunisian society.
