De Surpriseshow Nazanin Taheri | TOBAL | Via Rudolphi Producties
A disarming and hilarious story about dreams, endless waiting and finally being seen.
In the performance De Surpriseshow, Nazanin Taheri tells an impressive story about hope and uncertainty. In 1994, she fled from Iran to the Netherlands as a young girl. She ended up in the asylum seekers' centre (azc) in Kollum. While the world around her was harsh and uncertain, Nazanin had one big dream: to participate in the TV programme by Henny Huisman. Every day she practised in front of the mirror, hoping he would call her to make her dream come true.
But the invitation never came. Instead, she had to wait years for papers and a real future. She made friends, but also experienced unpleasant things, such as the tensions following the murder of Marianne Vaatstra. In this solo performance, Nazanin looks back on that time. What does it do to a child when you have to wait for years and you don't really feel at home anywhere?
Now, years later, Nazanin is on stage herself as a professional actress. With plenty of humour, music and moving moments, she shows how she has made her own dreams come true. It is a personal story that is recognisable to everyone: the search for a place where you are finally truly seen.
