The spoonbill – the iconic white wading bird with its distinctive spoon-shaped beak – is a symbol of one of the Netherlands’ greatest conservation successes. Once nearly extinct in Western Europe, the species is now making an impressive comeback. The Wadden Sea offers a safe haven, but even young spoonbills are being raised near Amsterdam. Using cutting-edge scientific techniques, this documentary follows the bird’s epic journey from the Netherlands to Southern Europe and deep into Africa. Along the way, we discover how the spoonbill managed to survive thanks to the Netherlands – and what challenges lie ahead in a world of change.
