De Koka Kola Rivier (9+) De Toneelmakerij
Jaylano from Suriname is staying with his cousin in the Netherlands and, in this musical and funny performance, goes in search of where he feels at home. Because how do you get used to a new place without forgetting your roots?
Can you feel homesick for a country you have never been to? In De Koka Kola Rivier we follow Jaylano, who lives in Suriname and is staying temporarily in the Netherlands with his cousin Kevin. Kevin has never been to Suriname himself, but his parents are from there.
While Kevin learns that the Koka Kola rivier isn't actually sticky and piranhas don't just attack you, Jaylano finds the Netherlands a strange place. Why are you allowed to call the teacher 'je' here? And why do people eat a sandwich with cheese every day? Jaylano wonders if he can ever feel at home here.
Writer Bodil de la Parra tells a warm and relatable story about longing, roots and identity. With humor, music and imagination, this performance is about discovering new things and letting go of old habits. A moving family performance about choosing between where you come from and where you are now.
