De Gesuikerde Onderneming - Tyler & Sebastian Koudijzer

In The Sugared Enterprise, Tyler and Sebastian Koudijzer delve into their Javanese-Surinamese roots.

This performance combines spoken word, images, and music to bring to life two brothers' quest for their family history. Against the backdrop of a changing Suriname, in a time of upheaval, they share the story of their ancestors, who once came to Suriname as Javanese indentured laborers. Their story raises questions about resilience, adaptation, and leaving a familiar world for a new future. The audience is invited to empathize with the struggle, the bond between brothers, and the choices made by the generations before them. Tyler and Sebastian portray the themes of migration, family, and identity in a compelling yet accessible way.

You can also reserve a ticket for this performance (without cooking workshop) with your We Are Public Pass!

Intergenerational Cooking Workshop with Esther & Watini Simin The workshop takes place from: 12:00 - 14:00 In Javanese culture, much is hidden in food. Not only flavors, but also stories. In how you stir, how you taste, how you cook for someone else. During this workshop, Esther and her mother Watini will take you into that world, the world of Surinamese-Javanese cuisine, where generations meet in scents, movement and stories.

Together we'll make two traditional snacks: lemper (sticky rice with spiced chicken or a vegetable filling) and gulung gulung (a rolled pancake with sweet coconut). The ingredients are already there; all we have to do is assemble them. As is often the case in kitchens: with care, a touch of precision, and above all, with stories along the way.

This workshop isn't just about cooking, it's about connecting. That's why we encourage everyone to gather with someone from a different generation. Because if we've learned anything, it's this: food is a bridge. To the past, to each other, to home.

Afterward, participants will take home their homemade snacks and the recipe. But hopefully, they'll also take home something else: a reminder of cooking together, of sharing, of where they come from.

A ticket for the performance costs €13.50 and a combination ticket for the performance and cooking workshop costs €18.50.
