De eenzame ster Hotel Modern / New Dutch Connections
“The lone star”. That is what Liberians call that one large star that adorns their proud flag. After 34 years, the charismatic actor Bright Richards visited his native country of Liberia for the first time, a country he had to flee when a bloody civil war was raging. Hotel Modern depicts this impressive and confusing return using ingenious scale models, puppets and live animation film.
A journey in which present and past intertwine, in which horrific memories of war and the new daily reality alternate with alienating speed. Confronting and with compassion, Bright tells the history of his country, which emerged in the wake of the history of slavery. He tries to come to terms with the raw violence in which child soldiers were deployed, and seeks hope in the powerful way in which the women of Liberia ensured disarmament and peace. A performance like a road movie in which the creators ask themselves how you can look your demons from the past in the eye, whether you can process a war together, and how perpetrators and victims can continue to live with each other.

Rotterdam Coffee Fest returns from 5 to 8 November for its second edition. It will feature a more extensive programme, *De Doelen* as a new venue, and four days of coffee culture across Rotterdam.
