CARMEN (MUST DIE) - No Mad Is Me/Giovanni Brand & DOX
A tragicomic stab in the back of Bizet with his anti-Roma opera.
A new Carmen is emerging: that of theatre maker Giovanni Brand. In Carmen (must die), Brand dissects Bizet's anti-Roma opera, which has been drawing full houses for a century and a half, with a healthy dose of humor, audacity, and musical fire. Brand creates an entirely new theatrical production and draws a thick line through the cliché image of the unpredictable, fiery, lustful, and dangerous people that made Bizet famous.
We follow Dimitri, the first Roma actor to play the role of Carmen. During rehearsals, he soon discovers that he is not only portraying Carmen, but is himself trapped in the stereotypical image of the Roma people. In a slapstick tour de force of scenes, he wages a battle that simultaneously satirizes and sharpens the debate on diversity. Carmen (must die) is an interdisciplinary clash of opera, flamenco, and theater. Of worlds where original arias collide head-on with flamenco and where humor rubs against pain. There is only one outcome: Carmen must die. For real this time. For opera lovers. For opera haters. For everyone who thinks they know this story.
This explosive, interdisciplinary performance is perfect for opera lovers, cultural skeptics, young people familiar with the work of Giovanni Brand, and anyone who wants to know what happens when a classic is reclaimed by the very person it is about.
