Berget Lewis: De kinderen van de Emmastraat
Singer Berget Lewis grew up in Amsterdam-Zuid in a musical family. Together with her twin brother Alvin, she travels to Suriname and Guyana, the birthplaces of their (fore)parents, in search of the origins of that musicality.
One-off screening of the documentary about Berget Lewis, followed by a Q&A with director Roozbeh Kaboly. Singer Berget Lewis grew up in the chic Amsterdam-Zuid in a musical family. Together with her twin brother Alvin, she travels to Suriname and Guyana, the birthplaces of their (fore)parents, in search of the origins of that musicality. With her magnificent voice, Berget Lewis has become one of the most famous singers in the Netherlands. But behind the powerful stage presence also lies a sensitive family story shaped by loss, resilience, and an age-old, rich musical tradition. Documentary filmmaker Roozbeh Kaboly, who won an Emmy in 2018 for Dance or Die about a Syrian dancer trying to rebuild his life in the Netherlands, has once again created an intimate portrait of a driven artist with Berget Lewis: De kinderen van de Emmastraat. Because where does Lewis' drive actually come from?
