In this selfie museum full of documentary, digital culture and live performances, director Isaura Sanwirjatmo shows how digital images and trends determine the appearance of women.
Beautify is an art installation that shows how ideas about beauty are formed and how technology influences how young people view themselves. In a time when influencers have become idols and Instagram filters and TikTok trends follow each other in rapid succession, Beautify asks questions about how technology creates unrealistic beauty standards.
How much control do we actually have over beauty standards for women in a world full of AI, facial recognition, and algorithms? Do we create these images ourselves online, or are we trying to live up to the perfect image that technology shows us?
In Beautify, the visitor is held up a mirror. That mirror shows something about our time and the society in which we live. Guided by the Beautify influencer Kira Rose, participants are confronted with the world behind cosmetics and social media, but also with the pressure that young women feel about their appearance.
