Bauhaus Forever
The opening of the renovated Bauhaus-Archiv in Berlin has been long awaited. And in a way, that fits perfectly with what the Bauhaus stood for. Bauhaus Forever has become a thoughtful film essay about Bauhaus as a movement, and not merely history.
Bauhaus as a continuous movement
The opening of the renovated Bauhaus-Archiv in Berlin has been awaited for years. The iconic building is being renovated and expanded with a new wing. Bauhaus Forever is not a traditional documentary about the history of the renowned school, but a film essay about the Bauhaus as an idea that is still in flux. The construction site serves as a metaphor for the terrain between past and future. It is constantly being closed off, redesigned, delayed, and rebuilt.
Modernity as an unfinished project
Through the voices of researchers, curators, artists, and staff members of the Bauhaus-Archiv, the film reflects on modernity as an unfinished project. One question remains open: how do we want to live together today? Filmmaker Nico Weber previously explored similar complex architectural subjects in Inside Prora . This film was screened at AFFR 2020.
