Bassekou Kouyaté is the undisputed master of the ngoni, the traditional West African lute that he single-handedly brought to international stages. With extra strings, electric amplification, and effects, the Malian virtuoso gives the centuries-old instrument an unprecedentedly powerful sound, in which blues, jazz, and traditional Malian music effortlessly blend together. Kouyaté has performed at festivals such as Glastonbury, Roskilde, Fuji Rock, North Sea Jazz, and WOMAD, and has collaborated with greats like Ali Farka Touré, Toumani Diabaté, and Damon Albarn.
