Germaine Acogny and Josephine Baker: two iconic women, each with their own story, connected by history. This performance brings them together in an exciting encounter, in which past and present touch.
Germaine Acogny, pioneer of contemporary African dance, returns to Dutch stages with a moving solo. In Jospehine, she embodies Josephine Baker as a symbol of black female freedom.
Inspired by Acogny, choreographer Gregory Maqoma offers a choreographic response with Bantu, performed by the Vuyani Dance Theatre together with dancers from Acogny's École des Sables. Side by side, Josephine and Bantu form AS WE ARE, a dialogue about memory, exile, and reclaiming identity.
On stage, dance becomes a powerful statement: about humanity, connection, and ubuntu—I am because we are.
