ARENDS De Poezieboys / theatergroep ECHO
In ARENDS, the Poezieboys & the punk-poetic theatre group ECHO welcome you to a stingy, lean, self-sabotaging, anything but baroque, yet playful and humorous evening about the life and work of poet Jan Arends.
A dive into the world of Jan Arends
De Poezieboys and theatergroep ECHO present ARENDS, a performance about the life and work of poet Jan Arends. You will experience an evening full of poetry, personal stories and humor. Anna Schoen, Joep Hendrikx and Jos Nargy take you into the thoughts and emotions of the poet. It promises to be a unique theater experience that will make you think about vulnerability and humanity.
Discover Jan Arends: the uncompromising poet
Jan Arends (1925–1974) was known as one of the most honest voices in Dutch literature. His poems, sober and direct, are about loneliness, mental suffering and the feeling of not belonging anywhere. He wrote from his own experience and gave a voice to people who feel unseen. Two days before the publication of his collection Lunchpauzegedichten, he chose to end his life.
The search for space for the other
Arends was sometimes difficult to deal with, but behind his behavior lay a vulnerable person. His editor once managed to calm him down by simply holding his hand. ARENDS explores exactly this: how much space do you give another person, especially if that person does not fit the picture? Do you dare to reach out that hand and show understanding?
