oude Luxor Theater

The old Luxor Theater on the Kruiskade has long been a stage for new and established cabaret talent, intimate concerts, and beautiful theater productions. The building, dating back to 1917, breathes history.

A theater with 100 years of history

The Old Luxor Theater on the Kruiskade opened its doors on December 22, 1917, and is one of the few Rotterdam buildings that survived the bombing of May 1940 unscathed. The building was originally constructed as a luxury cinema theater, modeled after the Gaumont Palace in Paris, and was the largest cinema hall in the Netherlands at the time of its opening. After the war, it was increasingly used as a theater venue. In 1974, a thorough renovation took place that significantly improved the view of the stage. In 2014, the location was renovated again: the facade, foyers, and facilities received a complete overhaul. Both Luxor Theaters are managed by the Luxor Theater Rotterdam Foundation, with the Port of Rotterdam as the main sponsor.
