Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen: Art Storage Reimagined

In Rotterdam’s Museumpark, Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen is a dazzling landmark designed by MVRDV. Its mirrored façade reflects the skyline while revealing what museums usually keep hidden. Since opening in 2021, the Depot has become a must-visit cultural icon as the world’s first publicly accessible art storage facility, offering an inside look at how art is managed and preserved.

Inside the Depot

The building holds the complete Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen collection alongside private and corporate holdings. Fourteen climate-controlled rooms protect paintings, metal objects and photography. Visitors navigate the building via walkways and a glass lift, with views into storage rooms from multiple angles. Alongside this unique transparency, regularly changing exhibitions and curated displays provide fresh perspectives on different parts of the collection.
