Stooges’ Funhouse launches Sandwich Cult

Jip Boon and Kick Vogel are causing a sensation in Rotterdam with their smash burgers. First at Station Bergweg and, since February, also at their own Stooges’ Funhouse on Goudsesingel. From Wednesday 2 September, they’re adding Sandwich Cult to the mix. The new lunch spot serves sandwiches on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11.00 to 15.00. Later in the day, Sandwich Cult makes way for Stooges’ Funhouse once more, and the smashburgers return to the menu. 

Much of what Jip and Kick create is rooted in the classic cuisine they brought with them from their previous restaurants. That foundation is evident here too: culinary classics are interspersed with their own signature sandwich creations. A classic French jambon-beurre baguette is always a winner. With good bread, quality butter and tasty ham, you can’t go wrong. “We also sometimes take classics and give them our own twist. For example, here we’ve combined a BLT, Caesar salad and cordon bleu into one incredibly delicious creation.” The bread itself gets the attention it deserves, too. No heavy rolls or standard sourdough slices, but a light, white sourdough bread that sits somewhere between a Dutch sandwich and Japanese shokupan. Soft and fluffy, yet firm enough to hold whatever’s placed on top. “At the end of the day, the Dutch just want to eat a sandwich,” says Jip. “So we wanted something that feels familiar, but just that little bit tastier.”

Sandwich Cult is a place to sit down and relax, but you can also pick up your order to take away. “You don’t want to wait first for the menu, then for your order, and then for the bill,” says Jip. “You order, pay, settle down and your sandwich is on its way. It should be that simple.” If you’re in a hurry, you can place your order in advance and collect it at the agreed time. One sandwich for on the go or fifteen for the office straight away.
