Rik Versteeg presents If You Know, You Know
Rik Versteeg is a visual artist with a queer perspective. His work explores themes such as self-expression, human rights, climate change and the relationship between humans and nature. On 26 June, he will present his latest autonomous work at a small-scale exhibition in his studio. The exhibition: If You Know, You Know is the result of eight months of research into analogue photography and traditional darkroom printing techniques. The series consists of analogue shot images focusing on themes of queer desire, fetish and kink. Admission is free, register via this link.
Moving at the interface between reality and surrealism,Versteeg focuses on creating images that touch on both personal and social themes. Within his work, art serves as a space for reflection, connection and exploration of identity.
If You Know, You Know
In many queer communities, not everything is always spoken literally. People use symbols, body language, clothing and looks to communicate with each other. They do this not only to find each other, but also to protect themselves. These forms of communication are a way to stay safe, but also to connect, flirt and play.
The exhibition shows that way of communicating. Little is explained; the work speaks for itself. It shows gestures, glances and hidden signals. Those who recognise the hints feel understood. Those who don't get it right away are invited to look more closely and be curious.
The exhibition positions itself within a broader social context in which queer expression is increasingly under pressure. With this new series of images, Versteeg emphasises the importance of vulnerability, honesty and uninhibited creativity in response to increasing forms of censorship and social backlash.
