Luxor performances are accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing people and those who speak other languages
For deaf people, those with hearing impairments or speakers of other languages, attending a theatre performance is often a challenge. In collaboration with the Rotterdam-based company Speaksee, Luxor is therefore introducing real-time AI-powered subtitling and translation of performances. With this, Luxor is taking the next step in its commitment to being accessible to everyone.
Visitors to Ancient Luxor are given a tablet on which the text appears. There is a choice of no fewer than 100 languages. A feature currently under development will allow for the use of colour-coding to distinguish between multiple people on stage.
Luxor has carried out several tests and a successful pilot. One of the test participants was Katinka, who is hard of hearing. She says enthusiastically: “I was finally able to really experience the performance and feel like I was actually part of it!”
Luxor’s performances featuring real-time AI-powered subtitles and translation can be found via this link.
Accessibility in Luxor
Luxor is committed to ensuring that everyone can visit the theatre. Assistance dogs are welcome, facilities are in place for visitors with mobility difficulties, and Luxor is wheelchair accessible. For blind and visually impaired visitors, the theatre offers performances with audio description. And for visitors who are sensitive to sensory stimuli, a quiet room is available.
“Luxor Theatre wants to give as many people as possible the chance to enjoy theatre. With the Soundshape 1 Pro, we now have a tool that enables deaf and hard-of-hearing people to follow selected performances to the full. In this way, we hope to make a valuable contribution to the accessibility of our theatre,” says Marc van Kaam, Managing Director at the Luxor Theatre.
