Munir, a Syrian writer in exile (played by Georges Khabbaz) travels to a remote island in Germany with the intention of committing suicide. There he meets the elderly innkeeper Valeska, played by Hanna Schygulla, whose kindness rekindles his zest for life.
The film explores themes of alienation, loss and the search for meaning. Ronald Plante's cinematography emphasizes the desolate beauty of the island, reflecting Munir's inner struggle. Suad Bushnaq's music blends natural sounds with melancholic melodies, underscoring the film's emotion.
Georges Khabbaz conveys Munir's despair and renewed hope convincingly, while Hanna Schygulla's portrayal of Valeska has a quiet but profound impact. Yunan was the only Arabic film in the main competition at this year's Berlinale.
