Winners

Winners is a heartwarming family film about eleven-year-old Mona, a Kurdish girl who tries to find her place in Berlin through football after fleeing Syria. The film emphasizes friendship, perseverance and the power of sports.

This family film focuses on the story of 11-year-old Mona, a Kurdish girl who fled Syria with her family and tries to adapt to her new life in Berlin. Despite language barriers and cultural differences, Mona discovers her passion for football, which helps her make friends and find her place in the community.

The lead role of Mona is played by Dileyla Agirman, who convincingly portrays her emotional journey. Andreas Döhler plays the role of Mr. Che, a dedicated teacher who recognizes Mona's football talent and encourages her to join the school team. Winners had its world premiere in February 2024 at the 74th Berlinale, as the opening film of the Generation Kplus program section. Critics praised its authentic portrayal of the challenges faced by young refugees and its inspiring message of perseverance and teamwork. Winners was rightly nominated for the European Young Audience Award in 2024.
