Wasteland Festival: Postnatural Wastescapes
What does a landscape look like that is created at the sites where waste is dumped and processed? Researchers, designers and artists are examining the hidden landscape design of waste processing.
Waste shapes and changes the living environment. What does such a wastescape look like, a landscape that is created visibly or unnoticed at the places where waste is dumped and processed? Researchers, designers and artists will examine the hidden landscape design of waste processing in lectures and film fragments. The evening is part of Wasteland Festival, in which waste and ecology will be discussed for a month at locations throughout Rotterdam.
Waste is not just something we throw away; it is part of the urban landscape in which we live every day. All around us you see what we call 'waste architecture': from incinerators that masquerade as ordinary buildings on the edge of the city, to old landfills that are now a park. These places are often kept hidden. They show how our society grows, excludes people and nature, and extracts resources from the environment. Are you curious about this hidden world? Then come to Postnatural Wastescapes on July 10 at the Nieuwe Instituut.
The research evening is organized by collective.wasteland as part of Wasteland Festival. For more information about the festival, visit the website or Instagram.
