Violette Cornelius herontdekt

More than 200 works bring together the life and work of photographer and resistance fighter Violette Cornelius (1919-1998). A large part of her work remained hidden for decades and is being shown on this scale for the first time following extensive research into her archive. Cornelius belonged to the first generation of women who made photography their profession. She studied at the Nieuwe Kunstschool in Amsterdam, where she came into contact with the ideas of the Bauhaus. During the Second World War, she was active in the artists' resistance and contributed to the Persoonsbewijzencentrale. Her photographs of this resistance work were later recognised as important heritage on the Memory of the World list of UNESCO Nederland. After the war, Cornelius worked as a professional photographer on architectural photography, reportages and photo books, and she travelled the world, where international reportages were made that remained unknown for years. Curator Loes van Harrevelt researched the archive and also mapped out work by Cornelius in other collections. This research forms the basis for Violette Cornelius herontdekt.
