Via crucis
In the run-up to Easter, Laurens Vocaal performs Franz Liszt's impressive Via crucis for choir and harmonium.
Lent invites reflection. Laurens Vocaal offers a helping hand with a performance of Liszt's Via Crucis, about Jesus's Way of the Cross. At the end of his life, Liszt returned to the basics in his music, even to the point of minimalisticism. Now, instead of virtuoso excess, his works are characterized by sobriety. He draws inspiration from old composition techniques, Latin hymns, and Reformation songs, such as "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" (O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden). Combined with Gesualdo's responsories, written for Holy Week, a fascinating musical narrative emerges. This concert concludes with Bruckner's motet Christus factus est, which offers an answer to the reason for suffering and a perspective on Easter.
