Verbonden in Verlangen
Musical pieces that at first glance seem far apart turn out to share a surprising amount. In Verbonden in Verlangen, the focus is on music that searches, asks, hopes, and comforts.
Toonkunst Rotterdam and Philharmonie Midden Zuid present a programme revolving around longing, hope and comfort. Music from different eras proves to be surprisingly strongly connected through shared emotions. The choir sings works by Mendelssohn, Rheinberger and Brahms. In Mendelssohns Trauergesang, the search for comfort and resignation resonates. Rheinbergers famous Abendlied evokes peace and stillness, while Brahms expresses a deep longing for connection in his double choir music. Philharmonie Midden Zuid plays orchestral works that illuminate these themes from a different angle. In Sibelius’ Pelléas et Mélisande Suite, melancholy and longing sound through, while parts of Beethovens Vijfde symfonie lead from tension to light. Choir and orchestra meet in Mendelssohns monumental Psalm 42. Mendelssohn wrote the work during his honeymoon, and that warmth and joy of life are audible in the music. The choral works are led by Maria van Nieukerken, the orchestral works are conducted by Ghassan Alaboud. Together, choir and orchestra bring an evening full of recognisable emotions and musical stories.
