The Surfer

A thoroughly entertaining ride of twists, violence and psychological tension, starring an excellent Cage who returns to his Australian coastal hometown to surf, but soon finds himself at odds with an aggressive local surf cult.

In the entertaining and delightfully eccentric thriller The Surfer, Nicolas Cage plays a hard-working man who returns to his Australian coastal hometown, determined to buy the beachfront house where he grew up and learned to surf. He and his son want to enjoy the surf, but they soon find themselves in conflict with an aggressive local surf cult that has taken over the area. Led by the ruthless Scally (Julian McMahon), the cult preaches a toxic masculine ideology and organizes violent initiation rituals.

What starts out as an innocent situation quickly spirals out of control. Cage's character refuses to give up his right to the beach, and becomes entangled in a psychological game of cat and mouse in which the tension continues to rise. As the situation becomes increasingly violent, he loses his grip on reality.

The Surfer is an exceptionally entertaining ride full of wild twists, violence and psychological tension, with an intense performance by Cage. Get swept up in a chaotic and unpredictable battle, where the boundaries between reality and delusion become increasingly blurred. As the film was aptly described at the IFFR: "The Surfer is a wonderfully derailed B-movie and a must for Cage fans."
