The Jacket

Jamal Hindawi, a Palestinian theatre maker, goes in search of a lost prop and along the way he discovers not only the challenges of his environment, but also the resilience, hope and solidarity of the people around him.

The Jacket is the feature film debut of Belgian director Mathijs Poppe and premiered at IDFA in November 2024. The film portrays Jamal Hindawi, a Palestinian theatre maker who lives with his family in the Shatila refugee camp in Beirut. Together with his friends, he makes political theatre about their deep connection with Palestine and their situation as refugees in Lebanon. When Jamal goes in search of a lost theatre prop, he sees how successive political and economic crises have disrupted an entire region and its population.

Poppe, who collaborated with Jamal and his family in 2017 for his graduation film Ours is a Country of Words, combines documentary and fiction in The Jacket. The film follows Jamal's quest and his conversations with the people he meets, providing insight into the socio-economic situation in Beirut and the pain caused by historical disruption.
