The Balconettes
A scorching summer evening in Marseille. Three young women on a balcony. And a handsome neighbor. Pitch-black comedy with a feminist message, written by Noémie Merlant and Céline Sciamma (Portrait de la Jeune Fille en Feu) is a pleasantly abrasive mix of comedy, drama, horror and a clever dose of satire.
A scorching summer evening in Marseille. Three young women on a balcony. And a handsome neighbour. The Balconettes starts off sunny, but quickly takes a bloody turn. This pitch-black comedy with a feminist message, written by Noémie Merlant and Céline Sciamma, both known for Portrait de la Jeune Fille and Feu, is a pleasantly abrasive mix of comedy, drama, horror and a clever dose of satire. Actress Élise (Merlant), writer Nicole (Sanda Codreanu) and webcam girl Ruby (Souheila Yacoub) have a good view of the lives of their neighbours from their balcony. During a heat wave, temperatures rise even higher when the attractive neighbour invites them for a drink late at night. That doesn't go as expected. In the total chaos that follows, the current male-female relationships are put to the test. The Balconettes premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. 'Exuberant, funny, and bold, a real testament to the power of female friendship seen through farce and horror tropes' (The Film Stage)
