Tambourines
Reinventing History. Inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter, Tambourines is Trajal Harrell's tribute to all the women throughout history who have been denied the right to control their own bodies.
Divided into three acts—Excess, Education, Celebration—the choreography reimagines the story of Hester Prynne. In the novel, Hester is condemned to wear the scarlet letter (A for Adulterie) after giving birth to a child out of wedlock. Harrell imagines an alternative ending: What if Hester had been supported instead of condemned? What if the child had been welcomed with joy instead of shame?
