This study weekend explores the Buddhist concept of consciousness and how awareness can transform into wisdom.
In Buddhist philosophy, there is an explanation of the eight realms of consciousness. They are a classification developed in the tradition of the Yogacara school of Buddhism. The eight realms of consciousness are the five senses supplemented by the mind, defilements of the mind, and finally kunzi namshe. This last is the ground consciousness, or storehouse of the mind, which is the basis for the other seven and therefore the basis for our emotions and thoughts, our happiness and suffering. Causes, conditions, and interdependence are necessary for things to arise in the mind; they do not appear without reason. In order to free ourselves from suffering, we must first understand the cause of our suffering. In order to understand the cause of suffering, we must understand our mind and how the eight realms of consciousness are interconnected.
