STONE Garance Maillot
“What should we do with what we inherit? Can we ever move on?” That question forces itself upon Garance Maillot after the unexpected death of her grandfather. The young artist responds to the loss with the urgency of dance, the affirmation of the self, and the invocation of historical lesbian figures. In this way, an investigation takes shape.
Sometimes the void left by a departure creates a breach: emotion flows in, thought follows, and the body along with them — a body that mourns and remembers, but above all a body that acts. During her grandfather's funeral, Garance Maillot chooses to dance instead of speak. That movement sets an investigation in motion, in which heritage, present and future become intertwined.
Nourished by the writings of Monique Wittig and Audre Lorde, the young dancer and performer goes in search of lesbian and queer figures within the choreographic arts. She delves into the work of Loïe Fuller, Valeska Gert, Lucinda Childs and Jill Johnston, “double bodies” who paved the way. She reactivates the archives and weaves them with her own experience, while creating “a lesbian genealogy within dance history.” Through storytelling, movement, singing and direct address to the audience, and by dismantling stigmas, she tries “to ensure that this word never becomes fixed, so that it can encompass all the contours of the living.”
