QAQNAS - een Koerdische opera over vrijheid
What does freedom mean for women? The opera QAQNAS (Kurdish for phoenix) tells the story of women who choose their own path. Based on a poem by Kurdish poet Tarza Jaff (1972), in which women leave their husbands, choose their freedom, and are thereby declared outlaws.
An opera about freedom and choice
QAQNAS (Kurdish for phoenix) is a Kurdish opera about the meaning of freedom for women. It is based on a poem by the Kurdish poet Tarza Jaff. She wrote about women who choose their own path and are sometimes declared outlaws as a result. This opera artistically explores the journey of self-determination.
Music from a forbidden language
The Dutch-Kurdish artist Naaz sings the opera. A cast of women from diverse cultures performs the piece. They use various musical instruments and experimental electronics, including kitchen appliances. Naaz sings the poem in a Kurdish language. This language was forbidden for centuries and was only spoken indoors.
Origin of the opera
Composer Huba de Graaff created QAQNAS after a visit to Northern Iraq. During an inspiring dinner with combative women and experimental musicians, the idea for this special opera was born. The opera brings a universal story about courage and the search for personal freedom.
