In this masterclass, composer Pepijn van Dorst will use live examples to demonstrate how image and sound reinforce or counteract each other. Music also tells a story, but in a completely different way than image. What happens if you provide a scene with different music? Or if you remove the music altogether? How does the collaboration between director and composer work? And how do you translate vagueness such as “Do you want that A minor 7 flat 5 with a bit more mezzoforte in the rallentando?” into something that both can do something with? Using inspiring examples, played live and with existing music, we will delve into the choices you can make as a creator and discover how music invisibly guides the story. About Pepijn van Dorst Composer, teacher and multi-instrumentalist. After training as a jazz guitarist, he became fascinated by film – and has never left. Pepijn works on everything from commercials and sound logos to documentaries and feature films. Improvisation is a key word in his approach.
