Leven en Dood 2
At museum iCOON in Hoek van Holland, artist Fransje Killaars presents the exhibition Life and Death 2, a series of textile installations in the historic bunker spaces of the country estate. At the invitation of curator Helma Vlemings, Killaars responds visually to the theme of life and death, which is inherent in the bunker's original military function.
A museum between dunes and sea
iCOON is a small-scale museum and country estate for minimalist art, situated between the dunes and the sea in Hoek van Holland. The location combines unique historic bunker architecture with contemporary visual art and features regularly changing exhibitions.
Textiles as carriers of meaning
Fransje Killaars is fascinated by the power and effect of color, with textiles as the primary medium in her installations. She constructs her works partly from an existing alphabet of loose components, which return to her storage after an exhibition, supplemented by new works developed specifically for the space. For iCOON, she drew inspiration from the theme Vera Icon, among others. On display are the installations Image of Power (2023), Leven en Dood nr 2 (2026), Vera Icon (2026), and an untitled work (2026), combined with paintings and stamped canvases.
Vulnerability and current events
Killaars describes how the realization that we lead a good life, but that death is simultaneously close at hand, is more relevant than ever due to the threat and the many wars in countries around us. In her work, textiles function as a tangible, sensory layer that connects painting, architecture, and fashion, and reflects a personal desire for well-being. Her installations invite visitors to re-experience the space and give it their own meaning.
