La Mer Scapino Ballet Rotterdam
Following the successful production Anima Obscura, Nanine Linning and her international artistic team have once again created an overwhelming total experience. La Mer is a visually rich and emotionally charged multimedia performance about the beauty and vulnerability of our oceans.
An immersion in the ocean
Nanine Linning and her international artistic team present La Mer, an immersive performance. Following the success of Anima Obscura, they are once again creating an overwhelming experience. This production combines the beauty and vulnerability of our oceans in a unique way.
Debussy and reality
La Mer is inspired by Claude Debussy’s iconic 1905 work, and his choral work Sirènes. With 25 dancers, Linning contrasts Debussy’s romantic images with current reality. You will see the consequences of rising sea levels and pollution. This invites you to reflect on your own relationship with nature.
Dance, music and image
The performance is a hybrid of dance, music, couture and video art. The cinematic music by Yannis Kyriakides forms a modern counterpart to Debussy’s symphony. The soundscapes, written for soprano Barbara Hannigan, contain hydrophone recordings from the deepest ocean. These recordings let you experience the richness of life and sound.
