Underrepresented stories are given space here. This time, the history of the comfort women takes center stage. Why were these experiences so difficult to share? What role did shame, trauma, and the spirit of the times play? And what does it mean when such stories are not told within families?
The Dutch East Indies and Indonesian past is being discussed more and more. Stories that were given little space for a long time are now being told, researched, and passed on more frequently. Yet, some subjects remain difficult to discuss. This afternoon, we reflect on the comfort women and the silence that followed.
We will discuss this together. While doing so, we will watch the documentary Omdat wij mooi waren by director Frank van Osch and listen to a reading by Gerda Hartkamp, author of the recently published book Ik was een troostmeisje.
An afternoon about stories that remained beneath the surface for a long time. About listening, acknowledging, and making space for what was not told. Will you join us?
