IFFR x LV - 50 years independence Cabo Verde
Together with IFFR we present a film programme curated by Janilda Bartolomeu about the imagination of Cape Verdean female directors over the years. With work by Denise Fernandes and pioneer Sarah Maldoror.
This film afternoon celebrates Cape Verdean pride, joy and visions of the future by focusing on the work of female directors. The program includes the Dutch premiere of Hanami (2024) by Denise Fernandes, a poetic coming-of-age film set on Fogo that won an award at the Locarno Film Festival. The film is about Nana, who must stay on the island due to her mysterious condition, and thus learns to dream differently. Beforehand , Cap-Vert, Un Carnaval Dans Le Sahel (1979) by Sarah Maldoror will be shown, a historically important documentary about carnival as a means of resistance in post-colonial Cape Verde. Together, the films offer a rich glimpse into the past, present and future of Cape Verdean cinema and identity.
