Heimsuchung
A historical epic of the twentieth century, told from the perspective of a house by a lake. In it all, the house remains the only constant that preserves the collective memories of fleeting human lives. Based on the book of the same name by Jenny Erpenbeck.
The house as a silent witness
At the center of this historical epic is a house by a lake, which experiences the tumultuous twentieth century as a silent witness. Director Volker Schlöndorff, who won the Golden Palm in 1979 with Die Blechtrommel , bases his film on Jenny Erpenbeck's 2007 Heimsuchung, a highlight of German literature. Shortly after the First World War, an architect (Lars Eidinger) builds this house. The house remains the only constant factor throughout.
Lives and memories
Over the years, we see residents come and go. Jewish textile workers flee from the Nazis, and communist intellectuals are confronted with the capitalist reality of German reunification. The film also shows the projects of Nazi architect Albert Speer and the Plattenbau of the GDR. The house preserves the collective memories of all these lives, which would otherwise be lost.
