Gary Bartz
Living legend! Gary Bartz has been a leading force in American jazz for over fifty years. As a saxophonist and composer, he has worked with greats such as Miles Davis, Art Blakey and McCoy Tyner.
His musical roots lie in the bebop tradition of Charlie Parker and Jackie McLean, but Bartz never limited himself to one genre. In the 1970s he explored new directions with his group Ntu Troop, mixing African rhythms with bop, free jazz and rock. The album I've Known Rivers And Other Bodies became a spiritual jazz classic.
Even today, Bartz continues to innovate and his playing is driven by total freedom. From avant-garde to funk, from swing to gospel: Bartz weaves these styles into one whole. No retro trip, but lively jazz with bridges to new generations and genres. Wayne Shorter once called him 'our Beethoven' - and rightly so: Bartz is a living legend with an inexhaustible musical imagination.
