Fresh Cuts - Claiming Space

This film block brings real stories about getting a voice, taking up space and expressing yourself in words, movement or music. Personal, powerful and full of rhythm that reaches beyond the surface.

Claiming Space is a film block with real stories about getting a voice, pushing boundaries and shaping your own story on paper, in movement or in dance. A daughter carefully searches for more closeness in a relationship that feels distant. A female fighter steps into the ring, determined to claim her place. Writers open their notebooks and provide a rare insight into what usually remains hidden. And a musical journey takes us along the origins of bubbling, an expressive club scene that tells much more than just a rhythm. The Chinese Empress - Jonnah Bron In the year that Jonnah turns 30, she reflects on her relationship with her (adoptive) parents. She feels that a wall has formed between them over the years, but has never had the courage to discuss this. With the help of images from the family archive, we travel with Jonnah to her former hometown of Schiermonnikoog and back to China, from where she came to the Netherlands as a seven-month-old baby. By having intimate conversations, she takes the first steps towards a closer bond with her parents. In My Body - Annelien Nijland The hot-headed Cindy (34) describes herself as a peace-loving person who can switch to "psycho." She believes that women need to toughen up and learn to defend themselves in a world that often underestimates their strength. At night, Cindy moves through the nightlife as a nightclub employee, but during the day she trains for the first ever female "No Rules" fight in an underground fight club. In rare moments of peace — usually while smoking a cigarette outside the nightclub — Cindy lets her wall down. These moments provide a glimpse into her thoughts and motivations, as she shares her view on what drives her to push boundaries. Who writes knows - Sibrich Wijnia Why do we write in notebooks? What kind of stories are hidden in the notes we never share with others? Three makers open their notebooks for us and show us a piece of their world. Bubbling Baby - Sharine Rijsenburg Bubbling is one of the most inspired expressions of the Caribbean-Dutch cultural heritage. The rousing and extremely danceable music symbolizes freedom, strength and ownership of the diaspora. This documentary celebrates the legendary history of bubbling by going back to the historical and cultural roots of club music while simultaneously exploring the contemporary scene, where boundaries are constantly being pushed. By mainly giving women a voice, the film brings a cheerful and feminist ode to the bubbling scene.
