The struggle for water in the Colorado Valley
In the Colorado Valley, on the border between the US and Mexico, lie vast, arid plains. Water is becoming increasingly scarce there. 'Desert Passages' shows how the construction of waterworks is connected to current politics. Directors Kevin Brennan and Laurence Durkin provide insight into the long history of American exploitation of Mexico. The construction of the Hoover Dam, for example, caused water shortages in Mexico. This is now a reason for Mexican immigration to the US. Beautiful imagery reveals the reality of the landscape. The population is growing, while water levels continue to drop.
A new perspective on water is essential
Indigenous, American, and Mexican residents of the area share their views on the situation. They emphasize that a new perspective on water is needed for the future. The documentary shows that the problems surrounding water run much deeper than just drought. It also addresses social and political issues that affect the communities on both sides of the border.
