Depot Solo #1 - Mandy El-Sayegh
In “Depot Solo #1”, Mandy El-Sayegh transforms one of the galleries at the Depot into a large-scale, all-encompassing installation that immerses visitors in her world.
Mandy El-Sayegh is known for her layered, complex approach to painting, installation and performance. For Depot Solo #1, she is designing an environment that reveals the creative process behind her work: language, material and meaning are broken down layer by layer and rebuilt. This ties in perfectly with the principle of the Depot: making visible what normally remains hidden.
New exhibition series: Depot Solo
This exhibition marks the start of a new multi-year series at the Depot, in which contemporary artists are invited to develop immersive installations. This series, made possible in part by Ammodo Art, offers artists who have not previously had a solo exhibition in the Netherlands a platform for experimentation: an analogue counterbalance to the growing popularity of digital immersive environments.
About the installation
For this new commission, El-Sayegh presents an installation in which she reveals the anatomy of her paintings with new work: collages constructed from screen prints and hand-painted elements, incorporating both art-historical and contemporary references, including reproductions of old master drawings from the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. The result is a space that functions both as an exhibition and as a laboratory: fragmentary, intimate and immersive.
