De Dépendance- The Future of Drugs

Kojo Koram presents his new book, The Next Fix, at De Dépendance. He examines the future of drug policy, the influence of capitalism and inequality. Who benefits from the legalisation and commercialisation of drugs, and who pays the price? This English-language event takes place in Rotterdam.

The future of drug policy

Drug policy is changing worldwide. Cannabis is being legalized, psychedelics are being developed into medicines, and once-prohibited substances are becoming commodities in a multi-billion dollar industry. Who benefits from this transformation? And who pays the price? While investors pour money into these emerging markets, prisons remain filled with people criminalized for their involvement with the same substances. Enforcement still disproportionately affects people based on race and class. What follows the war on drugs, now that prohibited substances are giving way to commercialization?

Book presentation The Next Fix

On 11 February 2027, Kojo Koram, professor of law and political economy and author of Uncommon Wealth, presents his new book The Next Fix: The Winners and Losers in the Future of Drugs. Koram travels across five continents and examines how drugs, capitalism, and inequality intersect. He combines reportage, political analysis, and personal testimonies.

Harm caused by prohibited substances

From Louisiana's plantation prison Angola to the psychedelic boom of Silicon Valley, Koram explores the damage caused by prohibited substances. He also highlights the possibilities and pitfalls of the emerging legal markets. Can the new drug economy provide better healthcare and more social justice? Or will corporate monopolies and economic exploitation define the future of drugs?
